What happens next, however, is far less certain than it appears — and for a troubling share of US shipments, the destination printed on that label is not where the package ultimately ends up.

Studies and carrier internal reports consistently suggest that address-related failures account for a significant portion of misdeliveries across the United States, with some estimates placing the figure at roughly 23 percent of all packages that encounter some form of address complication during transit. Not every one of those results in a permanently lost parcel, but a substantial fraction do — generating returns, reshipments, customer service escalations, and eroded trust that businesses frequently attribute to carrier error rather than the address data they provided in the first place.

Understanding why this happens — and where the responsibility actually lies — is the first step toward fixing it.

The Problem Starts Before the Package Leaves the Warehouse

Address failures are most commonly treated as a last-mile issue, something that goes wrong when a driver turns down the wrong street or misreads an apartment number. That framing is convenient but incomplete. In the majority of cases, the failure is embedded in the address record itself long before a carrier vehicle ever approaches the destination.

Customers enter addresses quickly, on mobile devices, during checkout flows that prioritize speed over accuracy. The result is a database of shipping addresses that looks valid on the surface but contains enough ambiguity to confuse even experienced delivery drivers.

Apartment Complexes: Where Packages Go to Disappear

Few environments create more consistent delivery failures than large multi-unit residential buildings. The United States has seen substantial growth in apartment-dwelling households over the past decade, and that demographic shift has not been matched by equivalent improvements in delivery infrastructure or address standardization.

Consider a building with 200 units spread across several towers, each with its own entrance, mailroom, and sometimes its own street-facing address. A package labeled simply with the building's primary address and an apartment number may be delivered to the wrong tower, left at an unstaffed lobby, or handed to a neighbor who signed on behalf of the intended recipient. None of these scenarios necessarily generates a "delivery failed" scan in the tracking system. The package is marked delivered. The customer reports it missing. The business is left absorbing the cost.

Unit number formatting inconsistencies compound the problem. "Apt 4B," "Unit 4B," "#4B," and "Suite 4B" may all refer to the same residence, but carrier systems and GPS routing tools do not always recognize them as equivalent. When a driver's handheld device cannot locate the precise drop-off point, the outcome is discretionary — and discretion is not a reliable delivery strategy.

Rural America and the GPS Trust Problem

Urban density creates one category of address failure; rural geography creates another. Across large portions of the American South, Midwest, and Mountain West, rural route addressing remains common. These address formats — which use route numbers and box numbers rather than traditional street names — were designed for an era of mail delivery by rural carriers who knew their routes intimately. Modern GPS-guided delivery, however, frequently struggles with them.

Drivers relying on navigation applications in rural areas often find that the coordinates associated with a rural route address place them at a road junction, a property boundary, or a neighboring farm rather than the actual delivery point. Without local knowledge, the driver makes a judgment call. Sometimes that judgment is correct. Often it is not.

They can surface delays, flag exceptions, and alert both businesses and consumers when a shipment deviates from its expected path.

What they cannot do is correct a fundamentally flawed address before the package is dispatched. A tracking system that shows a shipment "out for delivery" provides no warning that the driver is navigating to the wrong building or that the apartment number on the label does not correspond to any unit in the destination complex. The failure occurs in a gap that tracking alone cannot bridge.

This is not a criticism of tracking technology. It is a clarification of where the solution must be applied — upstream, in the data collection and verification processes that determine what gets printed on the label.

Practical Steps for Reducing Address-Related Failures

Businesses that take address quality seriously before shipment can meaningfully reduce their misdelivery rates. Several approaches have demonstrated consistent results.

Address validation at the point of entry remains the most impactful single intervention. Rather than a single open-text field, shipping address forms should prompt specifically for apartment, unit, suite, or floor information as a separate required entry. This reduces the likelihood that unit numbers are omitted or embedded ambiguously within the street address line.

Offering address confirmation at order review gives customers a final opportunity to verify their information before a label is generated. A simple summary screen showing the full formatted address, with an explicit prompt to confirm accuracy, catches transposition errors that automated validation may miss.

Maintaining a clean customer address database benefits businesses with repeat customers. When a customer's stored address has previously resulted in a delivery exception, flagging that record and prompting for re-confirmation at next purchase prevents the same failure from recurring.

Communicating proactively with rural recipients can supplement GPS limitations. For shipments to rural route addresses, including a brief delivery note with landmark directions or a contact phone number for the recipient enables drivers to seek clarification rather than guessing.

Reframing the Responsibility

Misdeliveries are frequently logged as carrier failures, which shapes how businesses respond to them — filing claims, switching providers, negotiating service-level agreements. Those responses are not without merit, but they address the symptom rather than the source.

The data suggests that a substantial share of address-related delivery failures originate in the information businesses collect from customers and pass to carriers. Improving that information — through validation, deliberate form design, and proactive data hygiene — reduces failure rates in ways that no carrier agreement or tracking upgrade can replicate.

For businesses serious about delivery performance, address quality is not a back-office detail. It is a strategic variable, one that sits at the very beginning of the shipment journey and determines whether everything that follows has any chance of succeeding.
